About Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario

This city is where the Algoma University is situated. It is a city of the St. Mary’s River in Ontario close to the U.S Canada border. The city is the third largest in northern Ontario. Sault Ste. Marie is bordered to the east by the Rankin and Garden River First Nation reserves, and to the west by Prince Township. Native American settlements, mostly of Ojibwe-speaking peoples, existed here for more than 500 year.  In the late 17th century, French Jesuit missionaries established a mission at the First Nations village. This was followed by development of a fur trading post. This made traders, tappers and native Americans settle there. These cities were considered as one until after the war in the year 1812 when the U.S prohibited the British traders from operating in its territory. Though, the areas are still named as the Sault Ste. Marie.
