Nicola Valley Institute Of Technology is British Columbia’s Aboriginal public post-secondary institute located in Merritt, a city in the Nicola Valley of the south-central Interior of British Columbia, Canada. It is situated at the confluence of the Nicola and Coldwater rivers. The institution was established as a private institute in 1983 by the First Nations bands of Coldwater, Nooaitch, Shackan, Upper Nicola, and Lower Nicola. However, it was designated a Provincial Institute under the British Columbia College and Institute Act in 1995. NVIT spent years in the downtown core of Merritt, British Columbia. The Eagles Perch campus opened in 2002.

Nicola Valley Institute Of Technology is a member of the Indigenous Adult and Higher Learning Association (IAHLA), created in 2003 to represent and work on behalf of Aboriginal-controlled adult and post-secondary education institutes in British Columbia.

Merritt is a city in south-central British Columbia, Canada, located in the Nicola Valley. It is the first major community met after traveling down Phase One of the Coquihalla Highway and serves as the entrance to all other major roadways to the B.C. Interior. It is located at the junction of the Nicola and Coldwater rivers.

Merritt, located at an elevation of 595 meters (1950 feet) above sea level, has pleasant winters with little snowfall and warm, dry, sunny summers. With a population of 8,000, Merritt can meet all your everyday living needs in a handy and compact city center.

Nicola Valley Institute Of Technology Scholarships

The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) awards scholarships to students who have demonstrated excellence in their study area.

The institute offers a variety of scholarships, including

  • the Carol and Donald Blaisdell Scholarship,
  • the Dr. Ronald K. Rosenbaum Scholarship, and
  • the Lynn and Bernie Jacobs Scholarship.

‘NVIT gives high priority to first nations candidates; all applicants must know of First Nations Culture and experience working with First Nations people; all applicants must speak, or be willing to learn, an aboriginal language; unless otherwise stated, commencement dates are normally dependent on the availability of a suitable candidate; and, in the interest of the environment, only those applicants short-listed will be contacted.’
