Admission Requirements for International Students at Northern Alberta

Academic requirements for admission into NAIT vary according to the program. Therefore, you need to check the programs page on the school’s website for the requirements for each program.

Suppose your grades or results are not available when you apply to the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. In that case, you must provide proof of enrolment in the prerequisite courses. Proof of enrolment could be any of the following:

• Completing the confirmation of enrolment form
• Transcripts indicate future subjects
• Letter from your school showing the upcoming classes you enrolled in
• Reporting software used by your school
• Your E-class schedule

English Language Proficiency Requirements for International Students

Since the official language of instruction at NAIT is English, you must meet the specified English Language Proficiency (ELP) requirements. Suppose you have completed three years of study in an institution that uses English as the primary language of instruction. In that case, you may not need to provide any other proof of proficiency in English. However, you must provide transcripts to show that you have completed such a study.

Duolingo English Test Score of 100 for the Business Administration program. A minimum score of 115 for all other programs at NAIT except the Respiratory Therapy Program.

CAEL online Requirements vary according to the program

Canadian Language Benchmarks Assessment (CLB) Successful completion of the program with a minimum score of 8 in each of the components (Speaking, Reading, Listening, and Writing)

IELTS (Academic) Overall score of 6.5, with 6.5 in speaking and 6.0 in reading, listening, and writing.

NAIT English Language Proficiency Exam 75% or higher in each of the four components

NAIT’s Level 6 Courses (NEAP611, NEAP621, and NEAP631) Completion of the three courses with 60% or more in each course.

TOEFL iBT 23 in speaking, 20 in each of reading, listening, and writing

The Duolingo English Test, CAEL online, and TOEFL iBT are only taken temporarily due to the impact COVID-19 may have had on students who wish to take other English proficiency tests.

If you are exempt from NAIT’s English Language Proficiency countries, you do not have to provide proof of proficiency in English.

Applying for Admission at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Alberta

Before applying for admission, check your chosen program’s availability. The availability of a program is determined by how many persons have applied for the program before the deadline. An open program still has application slots available.

If a program is tagged ‘waitlisted,’ it means applicants for the program are full, and subsequent applicants are placed on a waitlist. It is possible to still get admitted for a waitlisted program if you meet the requirements and other persons who had applied before you did not meet admission requirements.

There is no guarantee that you will receive an admission offer if you are placed on a waitlist. A closed program implies that applicants are no longer taken for it. A program not available for a particular session is tagged ‘N/A.’

After checking and ensuring you meet all requirements, you will follow these steps to apply to NAIT:

• Create a student account through myNAIT
• Obtain your NAIT Student ID Number from the email you will receive once you have created your account
• Apply to NAIT online through Apply Alberta (APAS)
• Upload all required documents and pay the application fee

When applying through APAS, you will need your 9-digit Alberta student number, your NAIT ID number, your email address, copies of your transcripts and language proficiency results, and a means of payment. You can use a Visa Card or Mastercard. If you are uploading documents that are not written in English, you must provide a translation alongside it. The translation must be accurate and must bear a certified translator’s official stamp.

How to fill in your details correctly when applying for admission

Your country of citizenship will be the country that appears on the international passport you are using, even if it is not your country of origin. If you make any mistakes while applying, you can use the Edit Profile or Restart option to correct your details.

After submitting your application, you can check your admission status through the myNAIT portal. Your status could be any of the following: application review, admitted conditional, admitted-full, hold/waitlist, and canceled. You may also be given a study permit deadline or other conditions to meet. Whether you check your status or not, you will receive an email with a letter of acceptance if you have been offered admission at NAIT.

After receiving an offer of admission indicated as indicated in the Letter of Acceptance mailed to you, the next thing is to apply for a study permit. Applying for a study permit in Canada is done through the Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). In addition, international students applying from China, Morocco, India, Pakistan, Senegal, Vietnam, or the Philippines can apply for their study permit through the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program.

Study Permit For International Students

All international students must have a valid study permit by the first day of classes to begin their studies at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. The proof will be sent to the myNAIT portal and can be any of the following:

• A scanned copy of a post-secondary school study permit will still be valid until after the start of classes.
• A study permit that has expired or will expire before the start of the class alongside a screenshot of the student’s IRCC portal indicating an application for an extension of the study permit.
• When the student’s study visa was approved, a scanned copy of the Letter of introduction or Letter of Approval was given by the IRCC. This has the study permit reference number and is considered valid proof.
• A scanned copy of the Verification of Status document for students who may have lost their study permit and are yet to get a replacement.
• A scanned copy of the student’s secondary school study permit alongside a screenshot of the student’s IRCCC portal indicating application for a post-secondary school study permit. The IRCC’s processing time must suggest that the new study permit will be ready by the start of classes.
