Algoma University

Algoma University, Canada established in 1965 as Algoma College is affiliated with Laurentian University in Sudbury. The University was granted autonomy in 2008 as an independent University. This charter gives it the faculty to operate as a fully autonomous university and became the 19th university in Ontario, Canada.

Algoma University is an undergraduate-only university that is fully committed to being a teaching-oriented university that cultivates and promotes an inclusive, respectful and safe cross-cultural learning community that values the opportunities to learn from staff, students, and visitors from communities in Northern Ontario as well as from all parts of the world.

Eligibility Criteria For The Algoma Scholarships/Awards

To be eligible for these scholarships/awards, all candidates are to pay the international differential fee which includes university transfers, second-degree students, college diplomas, and college transfers. This scholarship is not applicable to U.S citizens. There are different scholarships available for students which include:

Algona Entrance Scholarships

If you are an international student and you are required to pay the international differential fee including university transfers, second-degree students, college diploma, and college transfer you are therefore eligible for the Algoma Entrance Scholarship.

Under no circumstances will international scholarships be deferred. Students must accept the terms and conditions of admission and scholarship awarded for the year the offer was made.

This scholarship is not accessible to US citizens because they already have a significant tuition fee discount.

The Chancellor’s award Scholarships

This is awarded to international students entering their first year in the university. This scholarship has an annual value of $5,000. To be eligible, candidates must maintain an average of 80% each year with no failures on previous fall/winter courses.

Recipients of the scholarship transitioning to permanent residency will continue to be eligible for the balance of their renewable scholarship fr a total of four years. The scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must:

  • Be studying on a full-time basis
  • Complete all their qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies in any program of study at the university
  • Achieve a minimum A+ average (or country equivalent) on their academic record.

It is required that all students must meet the language requirements below:

  • TOEFL – 560 (83 internet-based)
  • MELAB – 90 percent
  • IELTS – 7.0
  • PTE – 65
  • ESL Level 4 – 80 percent

Presidents Award Scholarships

This is also for candidates entering their first year in the university. It is valued at $2,500. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must meet the following:

  • Student Registrations must be in course loads less than 30 credit
  • Students must be studying on a full-time basis
  • Students must achieve a minimum A+ average (or country equivalent) on their previous academic record.

Dean’s Award Scholarships

This award is non-renewable and it is strictly for international students entering their first year in the university. To be eligible for this award, students must:

  • Be studying on a full-time basis in the university
  • Achieve a minimum B+ average (or country equivalent) on their previous academic record.
  • Register in course loads less than 30 credits

Award Of Excellence Scholarships

This is also awarded to international students entering their first year in the university. It has a total value of $500. To be qualified for this scholarship, candidates must:

  • Be studying on a full-time basis in the university
  • Be registered in course loads less than 30 credit
  • Achieve a minimum of B+ average (or country equivalent) on their previous academic record.

Algoma Award of Excellence

The Award of Excellence is an entrance scholarship valued at $500 for international students entering their first year of study at Algoma University, completing their previous academic qualification with a minimum country-equivalent grade average of B (using the Algoma U grading scale). To qualify, candidates must be studying on a full-time basis (24-30 credits over two consecutive terms of study).

Registrations in a course load of fewer than 30 credits, but greater than or equal to 24 credits will be prorated. Students must complete all qualifying requirements in the academic year prior to commencing studies in any program of study at Algoma University.

GCE (Cambridge Pearson) A-level Scholarship

General Certificate of Education Advanced Level (“A” Levels)

The top two “A” level subjects are required for award purposes (“AS” not acceptable).

International Baccalaureate Scholarship

International Baccalaureate students must provide official transcripts and proof of their IB Diploma, to qualify for an unconditional entrance scholarship.

Algoma University Residence

Application for housing attracts an application fee of 50 CAD. After the completion of the housing application, a deposit of 500 CAD is required of all students. This fee is for spot reservation at the residence hall and it is deducted from the total residence fees.

Students will pay fees for rooms in halls of residence and residential apartment ranging from 9,300 CAD to 11,400 CAD per year.
