About Bishop’s University

Bishop’s University simply referred to as BU is a little Liberal arts college/university located in Lennoxville, a borough of Sherbrooke, province of Quebec, Canada. The institution was established by the Bishop of Quebec, George Mountain.

The Right Reverend Dr. George Mountain in addition served as the first principal of McGill University.

BU is one of three higher institutions in the province of Quebec where English is the primary language of teaching, the others are; McGill University and Concordia University, both located in Montreal.

Bishop’s University started its foundation by annexing the Lennoxville Classical School as Bishop’s College School in the 1840s. However, the college was formally founded in 1843 and it received a royal charter from Queen Victoria in 1853.

Admission Procedures

How to Apply to study at BU

1. Visit the online application page by clicking the link: Apply to study at BU

2. Choose the type of application that applies to you. Fill and complete the application form and submit it online. Thereafter pay an application fee of $65 CAD via credit card. It is important to note that candidates who are applying for an exchange program from approved partner universities do not need to pay any application fee.

3. After payment you will be granted access to upload your supporting documents for your application. Nevertheless, should you not have the documents ready at the moment, you can submit them later directly to the Admissions Office by email “[email protected]”, during regular business hours, or via post to the address below:

Note: Unofficial documents which are submitted via email may be accepted for the sole purpose of making a conditional offer of admission. However, final official documents are required to be submitted so as to confirm such an offer.

4. Afterwards, upon the submission of your application, you will be sent an email that contains your log-in information needed to access your myBU portal, with this you will be able to track your application status.

5. As soon as the evaluation of applications for a given period begins, admissions files are followed up on, on a rolling basis. This indicates that as soon as all required documents are received, BU’s office will finish the first stage of evaluation within 10 business days. Except for Graduate Programs and Applications to Music programs, because these need to be assessed based on their audition as well.

International Students Applications

General Admission Requirements

The underlisted eligibility is advised to be used as a guideline to increase competitiveness for admissions consideration. Note, however, that meeting the minimum stated requirements does not guarantee admission.

Nevertheless, students who do not fulfill these general requirements may be considered on individual grounds. In which case, Admissions Office may require additional information, added to that stated below.

  • You must have completed 12 years of formal university preparation, and thus obtained a secondary school certificate that would grant you access to university in any country. In addition, should you have studied at or graduated from a secondary school in a country where secondary school is completed at only 11 years of study your application will be assessed on an individual basis?
  • The minimum score expected is varied depending on the curriculum followed; also, your transcripts will be assessed on an individual basis.

Required Supporting Documents: All Applicants

  • All aspiring students to BU must submit proof of English proficiency. If your level of English proficiency does not currently meet BU’s minimum requirements, please consider one of the other English Language Pathway Programs with which we are a partner.
  • Obtain and provide a completed recognized English assessment with an appropriate minimum score:
    • TOEFL, an overall score of 237 “computer-based” or 90 “Internet-based”
    • IELTS minimum overall point of 6.5
    • MELAB score of 85
    • CAEL lowest overall score of 70
    • Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE) lowest score of C
    • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) minimum score of C
    • Pearson Test of English: Academic (PTE: Academic) lowest score of 61
    • Duolingo English Test (DET) must obtain a score of 115 with no sub-score under 90
  • Documents Required: The official English assessment score result must be sent to Bishop’s University strictly from the testing organization
  • Submit your high school transcript, with the mid-term course grades as available
  • Provide a copy of your personal identification documents. Consult the Personal Identification Documents page to know which documents you are required to provide.

NOTE: The Admissions Office may request additional documentation, for example; a letter of motivation, CV, etc. These may be required to finalize your application.

Program-Specific Additional Supporting Documents

To apply to Programs into the Department of Music, you will be required to fulfill the following additional criteria

  • Letter of musical background

International Baccalaureate (IB) Students

You must be an IB student for admission purposes if you:

  • at the moment finishing a full IB Diploma at a recognized IB school, or you
  • obtained a full IB Diploma in the last two years from a recognized IB school and have not studied somewhere else since graduation.

Admission Requirements

The following criteria are to be used as guidelines to compete for admissions consideration. Thus, meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission. To be eligible, you must also meet the program-specific requirements.

If however, you do not meet the requirements, you may anyways be considered based on an individual basis.

General Requirements

  • Must Complete IB Diploma
  • Obtained a minimum predicted IB Diploma score of 30.

IB Courses and Transfer Credit

As a student at BU, you can receive advanced rating credit for most Higher Level IB courses completed with a score of 5 or better.

Any student that completes the full IB Diploma, obtaining a final score of 30 or higher is eligible to receive 30 advanced standing credits, this is equivalent to one year of full-time study.

Applicants Required Supporting Documents

  • Proof of English proficiency. As an applicant, you are required to submit proof of English proficiency.
  • Submit a High school transcript, indicating a predicted IB results, including current mid-term grades or final IB Diploma results if already graduated.
  • Provide a copy of your personal identification documents.
  • Music applicants: for music students auditions and letters of musical background are expected. Therefore, refer to the Music Admissions Information Sheet.

Graduate Application: Master of Science (MSc)

Admission Requirements:

  • Must have completed an undergraduate degree in a related field with high academic standing

  • Proof of English proficiency: As an applicant, you must submit proof of English proficiency.
  • Provide a copy of your most recent university transcript

Bishop’s University Scholarships

Entering Students

There are two main categories for all entering students at BU:

  • Competitive admission scholarships
  • Awards and bursaries.

Competitive Scholarships

BU’s scholarships value: $500 – $20,000 per academic year.

Status: Renewable for your entire time at Bishop’s, while some are one-time awards which be can receive either as a new student or a continuing student.

Automatic upon admission by March 1st with all supporting documents submitted no later than March 15th.

Chancellor’s Excellence Scholarship

Scholarship Value: $10,000 per year, for up to three additional years or a total value of $40,000.

Status: Meant to recognize and reward students who demonstrate outstanding academic records and who imbues Bishop’s fundamental virtues of sound learning, good citizenship, community, discovery, excellence, and sustainability.

Awards and Bursaries

Awards and bursaries Value: $800-$8,000 per academic year.

Status: Most are one-time non-renewable and available only to entering students.

Automatic upon completion of your online application for admissions, in addition to completing the online awards and bursaries application by March 1st.

Also, all supporting documents for admissions applications must be submitted not later than March 15th. Thereafter, all applicants with completed admission files will be reviewed and awards and bursaries offer made.
