Canada Topples The U.S As Most Popular Study Abroad Destinations

Canada and the U.K have overtaken the United States as the two most popular study abroad destinations in a recent survey conducted by educations.com.

International students are not very more interested in studying in Canada nor the United Kingdom than they were before, rather it is the United States’ dramatic decline in popularity that drove the country to lose its top spot.

Two years ago, the U.S. was the most popular study abroad destinations for many international students. It fell to the third most popular destination country in October 2020.

The drop-in student enrollment has been fairly constant over this period. This suggests that it is not one particular event that put down interest in the U.S., such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Canada and the U.K. did see a gradual rise in popularity among international students. In the period between January 2018 and October 2020, the proportion of survey takers who choose the U.K as their preferred study abroad destination increased from 12.7 per cent to around fifteen (15) percent. In the same period, Canada saw an increase from ten (10) percent to 13.8 percent.

The U.S. on the other hand saw a continuous decrease from 21.6 percent down to 10.7 percent. Germany and Australia were fourth and fifth. France, Netherlands, Spain Italy, and Sweden made up the rest of the top ten.

educations.com is an online platform that helps prospective international students find relevant information on their journey towards studying abroad. The online platform also allows educational institutions to market themselves.

Post-study options a crucial factor in the country choice

Options to stay after studies have become an increasingly crucial factor in choosing a country to study in. This may have played an important role in why the United States has become less popular, as the U.S. has more strict and harsh visa policies for international graduates.

Canada in on the other hand is much more welcoming. Graduates have the option to apply for a Post-Graduate Work Permit, a work permit that allows fresh university graduates to work for any Canadian employer of their choosing.

The most crucial factors when deciding which country to study in are the cost of living as well as language and culture.

In addition, safety and socio-political climate, and the quality of the education system are other crucial factors. All four of these various factors have consistently been in the top five factors that determine a country’s popularity.

Post-study options have increased in importance over the past two years. In fact, it was ninth in importance in January 2018 but has now risen to third.
