The university was founded in 1968 as Capilano College but was later upgraded to university status in 2008.

Capilano University offers academic programs in the liberal arts and professional and career programs, leading to diplomas, certificates, and degrees at the undergraduate level. In 2008, it received accreditation from the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities.

Capilano University Tuition Fees For International Students

The tuition fees for international students are pretty affordable compared to other universities in other provinces in Canada. However, when you apply to study at CapU, you must pay a non-refundable application fee of $135.

As an international student applying to study at Capilano University for the first time, you must make a one-time down payment of a $5,000 deposit. This deposit will be applied against your international tuition fees once you have registered for courses at the university.

Capilano University Admission Requirements

Admission requirements at CapU are also dependent upon the program; however, at minimum, most programs only require successful completion of the following:

  • British Columbia secondary school (Grade 12) or equivalent
  • For International student requirements: Please see International Secondary School Equivalencies
  • You must obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0 (60%) calculated on English Studies 12, English 12, or English First Peoples 12, and two academic Grade 12 courses.

Note: Upon admission, you may need to pass the English Diagnostic Test

English Language Requirements

Should the English Language not be your first language or you’ve received your education in a language that is not English, you must take one of the following English language assessment tests as part of the mandatory requirement for your admission.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

Required minimum marks:

ELA (English Language Assessment Test)

  • Required minimum mark: 145

Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • Required minimum mark: 6.5 overall, with no single score below 6

CAEL (Canadian Academic English Language Assessment Test)

  • Required minimum mark: 70

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English – Academic)

  • Required minimum mark: 56

DET (Duolingo English Test) – Being accepted on a temporary basis until September 2021

  • Required minimum mark: 110

How To Apply to Capilano University

Domestic Student Application

Below is a step-by-step procedure to apply to Capilano University as a domestic student.

Domestic students refer to Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, permanent residents, and convention refugees.

Step 1: Find a Program that Interests you.

  • Review the admissions information for your program of interest to find out if there are other admission requirements.
  • Ensure to check the application and document deadlines for your program.

Step 2: Submit your Application to Education Planner BC

As a student, you must apply to CapU through EducationPlannerBC; this is a website for applying to universities and colleges across British Columbia.

Step 3: Receive an Acknowledgement Email

After submitting your application on EducationPlannerBC an acknowledgment message will be sent to your email from CapU.

  • The message will include your Student ID number, myCapU account, and email address.
  • Also, instructions on how to track your application will also be included.
  • In addition, all future messages from CapU will be sent to your “myCapU” email.
  • If you’re applying to CapU as a new student, you can use your myCapU account to apply for entrance awards.

Step 4: Submit your Official Transcripts

Even though you submitted a digital copy of your transcripts on EducationPlannerBC, you must submit official high school and university or college transcripts for admission.

Official Documents include the following:

  • Official high school, university, or college transcripts
  • Certified documents
    • You may also submit photocopies of your academic documents verified by the issuing authority. These authorities include the Ministry of Education, your high school, university, or college, the apostille, or by the appropriate examination board.
  • Original academic documents
    • An academic document is deemed original if the institution issues it in accordance with its policies. Therefore, notarized copies are not acceptable.

Step 5: Complete any Additional Program Requirements

Some other programs may have more requirements for admission. Therefore, you will need to work directly with that program to complete your application.

  • Instances of these extra requirements may include a portfolio submission, interview, or audition.
  • Acceptance into these programs may require you to pay a tuition and fee deposit to confirm your attendance.

How To Apply as an International Student

Below is a step-by-step procedure to apply to Capilano University as an international student.

Step 5: Submit your official transcripts

Physical copies of your official high school, college, or university transcripts must e sent to CapU alongside your digital copies sent during your application.

Step 6: Receive the Letter of Offer

Once accepted into your chosen program, you will receive a letter of offer in your myCapU email inbox.

  • Confirm your acceptance into the program by paying the tuition deposit stated in your letter of offer.
  • This deposit goes towards your first-semester tuition fees once you register for your courses at CapU.

Step 7: Receive a Letter of Acceptance and Apply for a Study Permit

You will receive a letter of acceptance in your myCapU inbox on paying your tuition deposit. This may be used to apply for, or renew, a study permit.

  • Dependent on your citizenship, you may need to apply for an entry visa.

Step 8: Get ready for your first day.

After being accepted into your program and applying for your study permit, the next step is to start planning your courses.

  • You will get a notice of your acceptance in your CapU email and myCapU account.
