Finances at Carleton University

Carleton University reported an estimated annual operating budget of $489.13 million for the 2021 –22 academic year. The most significant expenditures for the institution are employee salaries, campus infrastructure, and student support services, including scholarships and bursaries.

Carleton University awarded students $21.5 million in scholarships and bursaries, totaling approximately 12,000 individual scholarships during the 2017–18 academic year.

As a student admitted from high school with an academic average above 80%, you often qualify for an entrance scholarship starting at $4,000 over four years, with $1,000 disbursed annually.

The amount students receive increases incrementally with their admission average, with students gaining admission with an average above 95% receiving $16,000 over four years.

Nevertheless, you must maintain a minimum 10.0 CGPA (A-) year-to-year to retain this scholarship.

Beyond automatic entrance scholarships, the university also awards twenty-four Prestige Scholarships, representing the university’s highest institutional scholarships.

As an incoming student, you must submit a supplemental application, in addition to your admission average above 90%, to qualify, and also, a good demonstration of your extra-curricular involvement during your secondary school years will increase your chances to qualify.

Prestige Scholarships vary in value from $20,000 to full tuition. Generally, they do not have additional qualification criteria beyond the supplemental application, except the Carleton Shad Valley Scholarship of Excellence, which requires recipients to have been alumni of the Shad Valley program.

Additional scholarships, such as the Arthur Kroeger National Scholars Program, are awarded to students entering a specific program based on their academic merit upon entering their undergraduate programs.

Prestige Scholarships

Carleton University’s highest awards are Twenty-Four (24) Prestige Scholarships. To acquire the Prestige Scholarships, the student must have an admission average of 90 percent or better. The selection committee also evaluates and accesses the range of the student’s extra-curriculum activities for these competitive scholarships. Prestige scholarship has different values and types, detailed in the table below.

Page Program Scholarship

In this category, about 15 scholarships will be awarded to students in the House of Commons Page program who are commencing an undergraduate degree program at Carleton University. The scholarship is valued at $1,000. But the scholarship is granted in addition to other Entrance Scholarships.

Eligibility

This scholarship is eligible for students entering the Carleton University undergraduate program.

Faculty of Engineering and Design Scholarship

In this category of scholarship, about 60 scholarship awards are granted, and it is valued at $1,000 to $5,000. This scholarship is awarded to the top students starting Bachelor of Engineering programs. The scholarship is also granted in addition to other Entrance Scholarships.

Eligibility

This scholarship is eligible for students entering the Bachelor of Engineering programs.

Carleton Capital Scholarship

Approximately or up to Thirteen (13) students are selected yearly, with one beneficiary for each province and territory, to get a $2,000 award in their first year. This scholarship is granted in addition to other Entrance Scholarships.

Eligibility

To qualify for this scholarship, you must be Canadian permanent residents, citizens, or protected persons commencing the first year of a degree program. The students must also participate in extra-curricular activities and have an excellent academic background.

An application is required. Deadline: March 1.

Collins memorial scholarships

Two or more scholarships, valued at $1,000 to $4,000, will be granted to students starting the first year of an Earth Sciences program. The scholarship complements other Entrance Scholarships.

Eligibility

To qualify, you must be starting the first year of an Earth Sciences program.

Bachelor of Global and International Studies Scholarship

These two awards are worth about $500 each. They are awarded to outstanding students who have completed an International Certificate Program (ICP) in Canada and are commencing the Bachelor of Global and International Studies (BGInS) program at Carleton University.

Eligibility

To qualify for this scholarship, you must have completed an International Certificate Program and entered the Carleton University Global and International Studies program.

Application Deadline

The application deadline is March 1 every year.
