Personal Support Worker (PSW) (Certificate)

The personal support program is a single training program designed and developed by Ontario provincial government to provide long-term care and support services to their citizens who are in long-term care facilities and to individuals who are living in their homes in the community.

The was meant to replace and also consolidate Health Care Aide and Home Support Training.

The program standardizes training and provides a solid educational base for workers that provides long-term care and support services at both institutional and community levels.

Duties of Personal Support Workers​

  • They assist their patients with their daily living tasks.
  • They offer their services in nursing homes, hospitals, hospice care, retirement homes, residential homes, and apartments of individuals in the community.
  • They are engaged in congregate house settings and day programs.
  • They are trained not only for the comfort, well-being, and safety of their clients and patients but also to show empathy, sensitivity, and respect to those in their care.
  • The workers ensure that their manner of approach, attitude, and general personality outlook is welcoming and friendly as this is important to the well-being and health of their clients.

Admission Requirements For Dan Robert College Of Health care

The following is a list of requirements necessary for entrance into the Dan Roberts PSW program.

  • You must possess a grade 12 or equivalent or you must be a mature student typically from 19 years of age or older and out for 1 year or more.

  • If you did not make a Grade 12 diploma at the general level, you must enter for the entrance testing required for all students.

  • You must be able to demonstrate English proficiency, demonstrate good skill in written and oral communication and comprehension which should be sufficient to meet the demands of the program when assessed by a personal interview and student questionnaire or literacy examination.

  • As a potential applicant to this program, you ought to show a good level of physical fitness in other to complete the clinical placement. Your immunization status must also be up to date. You must be free of communicable diseases. You are also required to have Hepatitis B Immunization.

  • You are to produce a Police Check of Criminal Record within 30 days of beginning school.

Note: Should you have a criminal record you will not be able to participate in the clinical placement and therefore will not be able to graduate from the program.

Graduation Requirements

The underlisted criteria must be fulfilled for your graduation to be effected.

  • You must achieve a minimum mark of 70% in all of Section 1, Section 2, and the additional 8 modules of the program.

  • You must pass the three skills performance demonstrations.

  • You are to achieve a satisfactory rating in each of the required abilities listed in the PSW skills passbook.

  • Be a holder of a current First Aid/CPR Certificates.

  • Ensure you have fulfilled all the practicum (clinical placement) hour requirements.

  • Lastly, make sure to pass the PSW Final Standardized Examination administered by the National Association of Career Colleges (NACC).

Practicum (Clinical Placement) Requirements

  • You must be physically fit to complete the clinical placement.

  • You must show that your immunization status is up to date. You must be free of any communicable diseases, and the show provides proof of Hepatitis B.

  • You must provide a Police check of Criminal records within 30 days of your starting school. Should you have a criminal record you will not be able to participate in the clinical placement and therefore will not graduate from the program.

  • You must show efficiency in performing a Standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR prior to your starting the Clinical Placement.

Early Childcare Assistant (ECA) (Diploma)

This program was designed to train and equip childcare workers with the necessary valuable skills, experience, and knowledge for engagement in daycares or early learning centers as assistants.

It was created to give you an overview of the duties and responsibilities of an early childcare assistant and also provide the opportunities to perform those responsibilities.

Furthermore, in addition to training on early childcare development, program planning, communication, and other important areas of interest in childcare, it also provides you with the ability to educate with computers in a childcare setting and show you how to use them to enhance the learning and in effect development of children.

The early childcare Assistant program is designed to prepare you for a variety of childcare careers.

  • You have obtained a standard First Aid and Basic Rescuer CPR competency prior to starting the Clinical Placement.
