How Important Is Improving Your IELTS Scores For Canada PR?

Language requirement is an important tool for Canadian PR. Without it, you cannot apply for Canada permanent residence through skilled migration programs.

Hence, it is an essential part of Canadian Immigration. Canada accepts two test formats for PR program namely CELPIP and IELTS for English language proficiency and French Language (TEF) test to apply for Canada’s immigration streams.

The higher your language score, the better will be your overall point score that will further improve your ITA chances for Canada permanent residence. One small step to increase IELTS score can lead to PR of Canada.

Increasing your IELTS point score by just one or two points can move you further higher on the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) score. The Canadian government converts your IELTS scores into CLB score to ascertain how many CRS points your express entry profile will get.

What Can IELTS Higher Score Can Do?

If you acquire high CLB score, it can have a significant impact on your CRS score for Express Entry. Combined with other factors like age, job experience, educational qualification, language skills, a slight increase in your CLB score could translate to increase of 100 CRS points.

Therefore, we would like to explain in details the significance of high IELTS score for Canada PR.

Let’s say, there are two (2) candidates applying for Canadian Permanent Residence via Express Entry.

Profile 1 is:

  • Single candidate
  • Age 30
  • Holder of Bachelor’s degree
  • Have close relative living in Canada
  • Has 3 or more years of work experience outside Canada
  • Has got CLB 7

The Total CRS Score is 346

Profile 2 is:

  • Single applicant
  • Age 30
  • Holder of Bachelor’s degree
  • Have close relative living in Canada
  • Has 3 or more years of work experience outside Canada
  • Has got CLB 9

The Total CRS Score is 439

As you can see the difference. Both profiles have every factor as the same, but the only thing different was their CLB (Canada Language Benchmark). A difference in language benchmark lead to their difference in CRS scores with 93 points.

What is The Main Difference Here?

The main difference was in CLB score, the profile 2 has 2 score points higher than the applicant on profile 1. In order to obtain ITA, this mean applicant on the profile 1 has to improve his language score.

But not much is required, they only require to get one or two points extra in each module IELTS namely reading, listening, writing and speaking.

What are CLB 7 and CLB 9?

These two are the CLB scores that are generated through the points scored in each section of IELTS bands.

CLB 7 is achieved by acquiring IELTS bands Reading-6, Speaking 6, Writing 6and Listening 6

On the other hand, CLB 9 is achieved by acquiring IELTS bands Reading 7, Speaking 7, Writing 7 and Listening 8

As you can see, just one point difference is enough to increase your CRS point and this little improvement can get you closer to the CRS qualifying marks for an invitation to apply for permanent residence.
