How To Apply For A Bridging Open Work Permit

This article will explain what a bridging open work permit is all about. It will elaborate who may apply for a bridging open work permit and how to apply for a bridging open work permit.

The bridging open work permit (BOWP) is different than any other work permit in Canada. This type of work permit is intended for a temporary foreign worker who has applied for Canada PR and is currently working in Canada but has an imminent expiration on their work permit.

They must apply for BOWP at least four months before their current work permit expires. In order to continue legally working in Canada, they may apply for a BOWP. This BOWP allows the worker to continue working in Canada while they await the outcome of their permanent residency application.

Who Can Apply For A Bridging Open Work Permit

Just like any other immigration application, there are certain eligibility criteria that must be met in order to apply for a BOWP. Below is a comprehensive list of the eligibility criteria in order to apply.

  • The applicant must be residing in Canada
  • The applicant must have a valid work permit that will expire within four months before applying BOWP
  • The applicant must be the principal applicant on the application for their permanent residency under these programs – The Federal Skilled Trades (FST) Class – The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) Class – Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)- The Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • The applicant must have obtained a positive eligibility on their PR application
  • The applicant must have applied for an open work permit

When To Apply for the BOWP

A foreign worker can apply for the BOWP as soon as he/she receives Acknowledgment of Receipt (AoR) in Express Entry account after submission of application. The applicant will need to include this letter as a supporting document for BOWP application.

But, the bridging open work permit will not be issued until permanent residence application has been verified for completeness (R10 check) by IRCC, which is usually done within the first couple of months of the processing of the application.

How To Apply For A BOWP

In order to apply for a BOWP, the applicant must submit the required documentation and forms that are specified on the government of Canada’s document checklist for a bridging open work permit.

If an applicant misses any documents or fails to provide sufficient information, this can hinder the chances of getting BOWP approval.

Additionally, an applicant must submit Acknowledgement of Receipt letter when applying for a bridging open work permit. This letter would be automatically sent if the applicant applied for PR in Canada through the Express Entry program.

But, if an applicant applied outside of the Express Entry program, then the letter will be sent by the visa office that is processing the application after they have positively confirmed that the application is complete.
