How To Apply For A Work Permit As A Refugee Claimant

People usually need to apply for a work permit and a social insurance number (SIN) to work in Canada. But, one exception to this rule is if you are a refugee claimant.

A Refugee claimant can apply for open work permits, which is a type of work permit that allows you (Refugee) to work for any employer in Canada. You are eligible to apply for an open work permit as a refugee claimant if:

  • You are waiting to receive information about your refugee claim from the Refugee Protection Division;
  • You have been recognized by the Refugee Protection Division as a protected person or convention refugee; or
  • Your refugee claim has been rejected but you can not be removed from Canada for reasons beyond your control.

Apply For A Work Permit As A Refugee Claimant

Not all refugee claimants who apply for a work permit get approval from IRCC. You must demonstrate sufficient proof that you need to work to support yourself.

So, before you apply for work permits as a refugee, get adequate information and understand the process before you begin an application. Here is what we suggest you should do.

Talk to your settlement counsellor

It is advisable to meet with your settlement counsellor or your nearest settlement agency. They will be able to answer your inquiries and help you with the information that you need.

Give your biometrics

You will need to provide your biometrics i.e your fingerprints and photos for the application. You also need to pay the biometrics fees. The fee for individual applicants is $85 and $170 for families applying the same time.

Gather your documents

Get all the supporting documents that will be needed. You should check the document checklist on IRCC website to help you gather the necessary documents that will be required.

In most cases, you will be required to provide a proof of identity, which must include a valid passport and 2 passport photos of yourself and family members.

Get money for application fees

You may need to pay for other fees, such as $100 for an open work permit holder fee (which can be refunded if the application is refused) and $155 for a work permit application processing fee.

Submit your application

To begin your application online, you must answer some questions to find out what immigration programs you can apply for. Based on your answers, you will be given guidelines and instructions on what to do next, as well as a personal reference code you will be required to use for your online application.
