Step one: Gather all supporting documents

To apply for the eTA you need to prepare your valid passport credit card and your email address. Note that the email address you submit must be the one that you regularly review.

Step two: make the application online

Secondly, the application for eTA is not done manually, that is, you have to visit the official platform of the eTA to apply.

Step three: Answer all eligibility questionnaire

Step four: Pay the application fee

However, if it is a program of study that is about 6 months or less and you did not apply for a study permit you must apply for the eTA.

Validity of the eTA

Your eTA is valid for about 5 years or until your passport expires. The status and expiry date of your eTA can be verified using the “check eTA status tool”.  You will need the details from your passport (such as the eTA number that is on your email confirmation) to do this.

You will need to use the eTA before your travel dates to Canada so you should apply for it a month before you travel. Although the approval of your eTA can be within minutes of application, but sometimes takes longer. So, it is better to apply earlier.

Exemptions of eTA

Without a doubt, in some cases, travelers have an exemption from obtaining an eTA. Though it does not apply to all travelers, but here are the cases

  • French citizens who live in Miquelon and Saint Pierre and are directly traveling to Canada from St. Pierre and Miquelon;
  • Diplomats accredited by the Government of Canada, and;
