International Experience Class
The Youth Mobility Agreement signed by Canada and some other countries in 2018 has made immigrating to Canada from Italy cheaper, easier, and faster for youths. There are three streams under the International Experience Class that can earn you a Canadian work visa valid for up to two years. The streams are:
- Working Holiday Visa
- Young Professionals
- International Co-op
Working Holiday Visa
Amongst the IEC streams, the working holiday visa is the most popular. Every year, the Canadian government decides the number of youths that can immigrate to Canada through the stream. Through the program, you can build relevant work experience for yourself as you explore many organizations that match your career path in Canada.
The working holiday visa is valid for a period of 12 months and is renewable for another 12 months. Before your visa expires, you can apply to become a permanent resident of Canada if you wish. You can only get Canada working holiday visa once.
Yet, you could make the stay worth it. This visa option is one among the few that allow for as much adventure as you can get in Canada. You may travel across provinces and territories as you want while working for different employers.
As part of the temporary COVID-19 precautionary measures, you may not immigrate to Canada on a working holiday visa without a valid job offer from a Canadian organization or a full vaccination against COVID-19.
The job offer will qualify you for the visa and also an open work permit that can allow you to work for anyone in Canada. The working holiday visa does not allow you to immigrate to Canada with dependents
Another way you can immigrate to Canada as a young Italian is through the young professional’s program. You qualify for this program as a fresh graduate from an Italian post-secondary institution of learning.
Preference is given to students of Medical and STEM programs that are willing to gain their first years of work experience in Canada.
Like the working holiday visa, you need a valid job offer from Canada to qualify for the young professional’s program.
The international co-op is the third stream of the International Experience Class. Does your program of study in a higher institution require a co-op or internship? You could have the mandatory co-op in Canada.
First, you must get a relevant internship placement while you are still in Italy. You may then apply for the international co-op stream. Several Canadian organizations are willing to admit foreign students to work temporarily as interns.
You might just be able to achieve your dream of working in Canada as an Italian through the international co-op program.
Although you must return to Italy after your internship to complete your studies, the international co-op could provide you with work connections you can harness if you wish to immigrate to Canada later on.
How to Get the Working Holiday Visa as an Italian
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Requirements
Since Italy is part of the countries that signed the Youth Mobility Program, you have met the basic requirements to the Canada working holiday visa as an Italian. Other eligibility requirements are:
- Be between 18 and 35 years of age
- Have an Italian passport. Your passport should remain valid beyond the period of time you will be in Canada through the working holiday visa
- Proof that you are an Italian resident. You can proof this using any document that shows your current residential address in Italy.
- Proof of sufficient funds up to $2,500
- Obtain health insurance for the duration of your stay in Canada. You will have to prove this at the Canadian border.
Currently, the COVID-19 requirements to travel to Canada from Italy on a working holiday visa are:
- Full vaccination against the COVID-19 infection OR
- Proof of valid job in Canada and agreeing to enter into quarantine immediately you get into Canada.
Step 2: Complete your Profile
To fill your profile for IEC, IRCC requires you to provide a reference code contained in a questionnaire. This questionnaire was designed to determine your eligibility for any of the streams. You should therefore fill it before filling your profile. Completing your profile requires:
- Your full name, date, and place of birth, citizenship status, address, and some other personal information
- Relevant contact information
- Your international passport
Fill in the details correctly and as specified. At the end of the form, you will be informed of the pools you qualify for so you can submit them
to the right channel. Ensure you submit your profile into the working holiday visa pool. You may submit your profile into more than one pool if you wish. But make sure you meet the requirements for any of those streams or your application will be futile.
Immigration, Refugee, and Citizenship Canada can only select you for one of the IEC streams. You will be chosen for the pools in this order:
- International Co-op
- Young Professionals
- Working Holiday
For example, if you submit your profile in both international co-op and working holiday pools, you will most likely be selected for international co-op. You will only get the working holiday visa when there are no more slots for international co-op applicants.
Step 3: Await your Invitation to Apply
After you submit your profile, it will remain in the pool with the profile of other persons until you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for a work permit.
If you do not get an ITA until the end of that year’s season, it means you were not eligible and your application will be discarded for that year. You may however apply during another season. Note that most countries will only permit their citizens to apply for Canada working holiday visas once, except if they state otherwise.
You cannot immigrate to Canada through this stream more than the number of times your country allows.
You have ten days after getting an invitation to decide if you will accept the ITA or not and 20 days after ITA to apply for a work permit.
To accept the invitation, find the menu option to apply for a work permit and click on it. The twenty-day period to apply for your work permit starts counting from when you get the invitation.
Step 4: Apply for Work Permit
This is the final stage to immigrate to Canada through the working holiday visa. Keep your work permit application deadline in mind and try to hasten things up. Waiting until just a few days to the expiration of the twenty-day duration is not advisable. The documents you need to apply for your work permit are:
- CV or resume
- Digital photo
- Health insurance
- Medical examination
- Proof of funds
- A police certificate may be requested
In conclusion, the working holiday visa is a popular immigration pathway to Canada for Italian youths. By applying for Canada working holiday visa as an Italian, you stand to gain the following benefits:
- Opportunity to work for more than one employer within one year of stay in Canada
