Obtaining Health Coverage For Pregnant Newcomers

Although the fear is there for Pregnant newcomers who are yet to get OHIP coverage, of course, provisions are still made, it just depends on the province and their regulations.

Lami is among numbers of pregnant newcomers who just came to Quebec, Canada last year. They came running away from everything that’s going on in Nigeria. Her husband is a student having a Student visa and she has an open work visa-permit. She has been working at a school all this time. They both have two daughters of 2 years and 3 years old. They are not entitled to Medicare, but just found out she is pregnant though not it was not planned. Neither of her two kids or her has any kind of insurance. She needs to know if there is any way in which her pregnancy could get covered.

But of course, Lami can be helped though that depends on which province she is living. For Closed and Open Work Permits, Temporary foreign workers who hold a valid work permit may be eligible for OHIP coverage. and it is the same in every province probably though with little bit changes.

Lami and her hubby are applying for residence actually but it could last a year. There is no insurance which can cover pregnancy otherwise. However they might not get initial coverage but it can cover all at the time of delivery. Do check http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/temp_foreign.aspx

Lami will need to talk to RAMQ. So long as she is working, i would think she would get coverage. Therefore Lami is eligible for coverage. Please check below link
