St. Francis Xavier University is a public undergraduate liberal arts university established in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, Canada. StFX as its commonly called is a member of the Maple League, this is a group of primarily undergraduate universities in Eastern Canada.

St. Francis Xavier College was founded as Arichat College, an origin of Roman Catholic Diocesan educational institution at Arichat, Nova Scotia, in 1853.

Shortly after, Arichat College was moved to its present location in Antigonish and renamed St. Francis Xavier College in 1855. On May 7, 1866, St. Francis Xavier College obtained its university status, becoming St. Francis Xavier University. Thereafter, the University was awarded its first degree in 1868.

Faculties and Programs

St Francis Xavier University is organized into:

  • The Faculty of Arts
  • Faculty of Science
  • The Gerald Schwartz School of Business
  • Faculty of Education
  • The Brian Mulroney Institute of Government
  • And the Coady International Institute.

Each of these faculties has subordinate departments under its administration appropriate to each discipline, for example, the Department of Philosophy is part of the Faculty of Arts. StFx Faculties are headed by a dean elected from among the constituent professors.

Rankings

For five consecutive years since 2002 – 2006, the Maclean’s Magazine has ranked St. Francis Xavier University as the top Primarily Undergraduate university in Canada. StFx University has also ranked first in alumni support for the period 2001 – 06.

However, in 2007, the criteria for the “Primarily Undergraduate” ranking was changed by Maclean’s resulting in St. Francis Xavier placing third in the category. Nevertheless, in early 2009, it was reported by Maclean’s that St. Francis Xavier students ranked first in choosing to return to their current institution, among other options.

More than any other university in Canada, St Francis Xavier students, on a per capita basis, have received Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) awards for post-secondary study from 2000 to 2004.

St.Francis Xavier University scholarships and Bursaries

St. Francis Xavier University offers over $2 million in merit-based scholarships and financial aid to its fresh undergraduates annually.

Consequently, any applicant with a Grade 12 average of at least 85% is automatically guaranteed an entrance scholarship to the tune of at least $5,000 disbursed as($1,250 each year for four years), and at least $7,000 for applicants with Grade 12 averages above 90% disbursed as ($1,750 each year for four years).

As a St. Xavier applicant, you are also automatically considered for larger merit-based scholarships ranging from $12,000 to $32,000.

These include the Merit, Phillip W. Oland, J.P. McArthy, Canadian, and President’s scholarships. In addition, in certain provinces and the United States, area-specific scholarships are also made available to applicants.

Furthermore, the Aboriginal, First Nations, and Métis students are certainly not left out, they are also included at St. Francis Xavier University scholarships with the James A. Martin Awards offer.

However, in order to be eligible to receive each subsequent installment of a scholarship which is given typically in four installments, recipient students must maintain a university course average of at least 80%.

St.Francis Xavier University scholarships For New Students

The basic criteria that make you eligible for scholarships, is that you must apply to St. Francis Xavier (StFX) University by submitting a first semester Grade 12 transcript by March 1. It is, however, important to note that scholarship eligibility is based on final marks for the five Grade 12 courses used to meet admission requirements for your program.

Also, note that final Grade 11 equivalent subject marks may be used in the interim to calculate the average.

The National Entrance Scholarship Program

As a new student, once you apply and submit your first semester Grade 12 transcript by March 1 with an admissions average of 85% you will be automatically eligible for an entrance scholarship worth at least $5,000 over four years of study. For more information click here

In Course Scholarships

The In-­course scholarship is awarded to students who have completed at least one academic year of 24 credits in the fall and winter terms towards obtaining the first degree.

They are strictly awarded on the basis of academic merit and performance at StFX University. 80% is the minimum average required.

  • Should you be eligible for more than one university-funded scholarship for either in the course or a renewable scholarship, you will be offered an award with the largest amount to which you are entitled.
  • No subsequent application is required for scholarship renewals and in-course scholarships at the end of each Academic Year (Fall/Winter).
  • If you have an average of 80% or higher based on 24 credits completed in the Fall/Winter terms, you will qualify for a $1,000 award.
  • If you are ranked in the top 5% in your group, you will qualify for $2,000.
  •  Should you, however, be ranked first in your group, you will qualify for an award of $5,000.
  • Students are grouped by year of study and degree program
    • Group A: B.A. and Music
    • Group B: B.B.A.
    • Group C: B.Sc. and Dip. Eng.
    • Group D B.Sc.N., B.Sc.H.N. and B.A./B.Sc. H.K.

Gerald Schwartz School of Business International Exchange Travel Bursaries

Bursary Award: $2000

As an StFX BBA student, if you wish to participate in a student exchange program at one of StFX’s partner universities the Gerald Schwartz School of Business International Exchange Bursary will offer you financial support for the exchange.

The purpose of the bursary is to grant you support as a business student wishing to gain an understanding of business, economic, and cultural environments outside of Canada.

Should you choose to apply:

  • You must plan to complete the exchange in the winter semester of your third year at StFX.
    •     You must be enrolled in either the BBA or BIS program at STFX.
    •     Should have at the least an average of 80% and must not be on academic probation.
    •     You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    •     Possess and demonstrate an interest in international affairs and developing intercultural competencies.

However, priority will be given to those students who are in need of financial assistance.

Tanenbaum Canada-Israel Student Exchange Scholarship

Scholarship Award: $12,000

The Tanenbaum Canada-Israel Student Exchange Scholarship allows two students from StFX to study at the Interdisciplinary Centre (IDC) Herzliya in Israel and brings two students from IDC Herzliya to study at StFX each year.

Any successful candidates will each receive a $12,000 scholarship to support the exchange. The goal of the scholarship is to encourage a common understanding of the business, economic, cultural, and social environments of Canada and Israel.

As STFX APPLICANT

  •    You must determine to complete the exchange in the winter semester of your third year at StFX.
    •     You are to be enrolled in either the BBA or BIS program at STFX.
    •     Must have obtained an average of 80% or higher and must not be on academic probation.
    •     You must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
    •     Demonstrate an interest in international affairs and developing intercultural competencies.
    •     Students with confirm financial needs will be given priority assistance.

The Weston Family Scholarship for International Exchange 

Scholarship Award: $6000

This Family Scholarship will be awarded to Canadian students from StFX to sponsor them to undertake one semester of study at any international university as part of their undergraduate studies in public policy and governance at StFX.

This scholarship for the international study was created so that Canadian students are able to develop a greater understanding of global public policy and governance issues through a transformative experiential learning opportunity.

What makes you eligible as an applicant:

  •    You must plan to complete your exchange in the fall or winter semester of your third year at StFX.
    •     You must be enrolled in a Bachelor’s Program with a declared Major or Minor in Public Policy and Governance.
    •     Should have an average of 80% or higher and must not be on academic probation.
    •     Only available to Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
    •     You must demonstrate an interest in international affairs and developing intercultural competencies.
    •     Note that priority will be given to students with proof of a need for financial assistance.

Killam Undergraduate Fellowships for Canadians to study in the United States(Open Competition Only)

If you are a student from a non-partner institution, you may apply to the open competition, which is in a self-paced program. You will, however, enroll as a fee-paying visiting student at your host institution.

You are also responsible for applying for permission to study abroad through your home institution, but once permission is granted to you, you are responsible to apply for admission directly to your chosen host institution.

If you are from any degree-granting institution in Canada, you are eligible to may apply for a fellowship to attend any accredited degree-granting institution in the United States.

Chinese Government Scholarship – through EduNova 

The 2019-2020 Chinese Government Scholarship is now open for applications. A total of 289 Chinese universities have been designated to enroll international students with the Chinese Government Scholarship, offering a wide variety of programs. Canada-China Scholars Exchange Program

(The Scholarship is administered by the Canadian Bureau for International Education)

Applications from Canadian academics, students, and professionals are been requested by the China Scholarship Council for any student who wishes to study or conduct research in subject areas related to China at participating Chinese institutions.

The scholarship is due for a period of 4 – 12 months for students and no less than eight weeks in the case of midcareer professionals, professors, and researchers.
