Who Is A Federal Skilled Worker?

Skilled Worker is regarded as persons or positions requiring a specialized skill obtained so as to complete some of the assigned tasks. A skilled labor may possess more advanced education, experience or training.

Positions in this category may include both white-collar and blue-collar professions ranging from electricians and lab technicians to lawyers and computer programmers. However, some semi-skilled jobs, such as administrative assistants, which can require advanced skills that make them be classed as skilled instead of semi-skilled positions.

Skilled workers are selected as permanent residents depending on their education, work experience, knowledge of English language, French language, and other factors. These qualities always help them succeed in Canada.

Completing an Express Entry profile became the first step since January 1, 2015, in order to immigrate to Canada permanently as a skilled worker under the:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program,
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program, and
  • Canadian Experience Class.

Under the Express Entry system, people are invited to apply for permanent residence depending on the information they enter in an online profile. Except an invitation is sent to you to apply, you cannot apply directly to any of these programs.

Skilled workers who prefer to live in Quebec can apply under a separate category. The province of Quebec chooses its own skilled workers. Applicants who want to go to Quebec are also referred to as “Quebec-selected” skilled workers.
